Role of the Lawn Care Operator

Lawn Care operators have three primary responsibilities – as ambassadors for the industry, public educators and service providers.

 

However, the value of the turf and ornamental pest management industry to the immediate customer, as well as to the consumer in general, is not often communicated. Lawn care operators must be armed with facts and be prepared to communicate to individuals and groups the vital services that are provided by the lawn care industry. Lawn care operators should take the time to explain new techniques and products to the customer; they are making an investment for the future. Operators should be prepared to answer tough questions regarding insect biology and behavior, justify the use of reduced risk techniques, and explain the benefits of the services provided.
 
Lawn care operators should be familiar with the information on the product label and knowledgeable about all aspects of insecticide safety, risk of exposure during application, reentry time, health effects, etc. Vital to consumer education is the ability to communicate this knowledge when responding to such questions. Operators who are knowledgeable and comfortable in their responses provide a positive image for their companies and for the insect management industry.
Lawn care operators are obligated to be professional in their physical appearances as well as in their use of body language. They should be neatly attired in clean uniforms, and themselves should be clean. They should be good listeners, responding honestly to customer’s questions. If they don’t know the answer to a specific question, they should find out and communicate the answer to the customer as soon as possible.
 
In summary, lawn care operators are among those with the important responsibility for minimizing the effects of pest as well as their economic impact while, at the same time protecting the customer, the property, and the environment.
